Shakespeare Team auditions

To everyone who auditioned for the Shakespeare Team:
Wow.
Thank you so much for wanting to be involved. I feel lucky to teach at a school where such a large part of the student body appreciates theatre and Shakespeare.

This evening I watched 112 audition monologues. That is more auditioners than any other theatrical event Hillcrest has ever had since I've been here (possibly excluding the big musicals where we don't have to cut anyone). I can fit 53 of you on the bus to the competition in Cedar City. If you're good at math, you will have figured out by now that that means less than half of you will end up making the team.

When the cast list is posted, there will be many of you who will not find your name on the list. In all honesty, many of you who end up not being cast, I really wish could be cast. A lot. I am sorry if this is disappointing to you, but please remember that you are still a valued member of Hillcrest's theatre program.

To reitterate: not being cast does not mean I do not want to work with you or don't think you deserved to be on the team. Many of you that I sincerely want to work with and deserve to be on this team will not be. Many of you.

There will be people who have been on the team in the past who will not be on it this year. Not because I did not think you were brilliant, but because I wanted to open the door for some other people that may not have had the experience yet.

There will be some new people that I so desperately wanted to work with, but did not put on the team knowing they will have more chances in the future.

There are some people whose preparation for the audition just didn't reach the level of many others who have been working night and day for the past couple of months.

So, if you do not find your name on the cast list when it is posted, please do the following:
1-Stop yourself from getting discouraged. You still have much to offer the world through theatre.
2-Audition for the musical next Tuesday. We need some great actors in this show as it is more intense than any musical we have done in the last 5 years. As long as you audition, we will cast you in the show.
3-Start preparing a piece for the Region/State drama competition this year. We need many great pieces to be part of our team and the more/earlier you prepare, the greater your piece will be. For more info on this, talk to Mr. Long or a presidency member.

Thank you all so much for being a part of this program and sharing your enthusiasm and soul with me and our audiences.

---Mr. Long

PS---the list will go up either late Thursday or early Friday.

Shakespeare Team auditions after school at the time you signed up for.

How to audition for the 2011 Shakespeare Team

WHEN: Wednesday, August 24 2:45-6:00pm (sign up for a specific time outside the Theatre Room. A sign-up list will be posted on the first day of school Monday, August 22)

WHERE: Hillcrest High School Room C-202 (the Theatre Room: 2nd Floor)

WHO: Any 10th, 11th or 12th grade Hillcrest High School student AS WELL AS any 9th grade student who is attending a Hillcrest feeder school (Midvale, Union, Albion). All auditioners must be academically elligible (at least a 2.0 and no more than 1 F on last quarter's report card).

WHAT: Hillcrest High School's defending-champion Shakespeare Team. Approximately 50 student actors who make the team will travel down to Cedar City for a weekend in October and compete in one of the nation's largest acting competitions. Check out the post below this one for more details.

WHY: It will be one of the most memorable experiences of your high school career. One of Hillcrest's most successful traditions!

HOW: Select one of the monologues below and have it prepared to perform at your audition. Although it is not required that you memorize your piece (since some students will not have access to these pieces until school begins), you are encouraged to be comfortable with the language and familiar with what your character is saying. This may mean that you choose to memorize it. However, that is not necessarily required of you.

Select one of the following monologues. Some of these are actual monologue pieces that we may be competing with this year. Others are from scenes that may be on our team. Therefore, your audition will help me see which roles you excel at as I choose who will be playing the leads this year. Each piece has a different mood/feel/objective, so read through them all and choose wisely. Cast yourself well. :-)

FEMALE: Coriolanus - Volumnia
FEMALE: Henry VI, Part 1 - Joan la Pucelle
FEMALE: Henry VI, Part 2 - Duchess of Gloucester

Shakespeare Team 2011

The magic is back!
Get ready to start your year off in high gear. Everyone agrees that being on Hillcrest's Shakespeare Team is one of the (if not THE) greatest experiences you will have your entire high school career. Come help us defend our Sweepstakes championship. The pressure is on. Are you ready to deliver?

Auditions will be open to any 10th, 11th or 12th grade student attending Hillcrest High. In addition, in 2011, 9th grade students attending HHS feeder schools (Midvale Middle, Union Middle, and Albion Middle) will once again be invited to audition for a spot on Hillcrest High School's defending-champion Shakespeare Team.
For more information on the Competition and Hillcrest's Team, see below:

Now in its 35th year, the Utah Shakespearean Festival's annual High School Shakespeare Competition gathers students from 100 schools in 9 states, and is the only inter-state drama competition in the area.
Team members benefit not only from being adjudicated by professional actors and directors from across the country, but are also given the opportunity to see professional theatre. Last year, Hillcrest had 4 students walk away with scholarship awards. In addition, workshops in dozens of areas related to the theatre world are offered. There is honestly, nothing else like it. Don't miss your chance!

The competition will be held October 6-8, 2011 in Cedar City, UT. The trip will cost no more than $200 per participant and includes transportation, hotel, some food, team hoodie, play tickets, and entrance fees. Fee waivers do not apply. In order to participate, a student must be UHSAA elligible (ie. must have had higher than a 2.0 GPA and no more than 1 F on their last report card).

The centerpiece of a Shakespeare Team is the 10-minute ensemble scene. This can include anywhere from 4 to 70 students. Hillcrest's ensemble scenes usually use as many kids as we can fit onto the bus (between 45-55). This year, we will be performing a cutting from Henry VI, Part 1 that highlights the internal conflicts that began the War of the Roses and led to Joan of Arc conquering the valiant warrior Talbot and the whole English army.
In addition, various duo/trio scenes and monologues will be cast from the auditions to compete to be selected as one of Hillcrest's individual events on this year's team.

Rehearsals for the ensemble scene are held on Saturdays and some evenings throughout the month of September at HHS.

In the past, some of the honors and awards Hillcrest has won at the competition have included:
*1st Place Sweepstakes (2010)
*1st Place Ensemble Scene (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007)
*Larry Lott "Best Actor" Scholarship (2010, 2008, 2007)
*1st Place Duo/Trio Scene (2010, 2008)
*1st Place Monologue (2010)
*In addition, Hillcrest's ensemble scene was the first scene to ever be asked to perform in front of the thousands of competitors at the competition's Closing Ceremonies in 2008.

Auditions for the team will be held Wednesday afternoon, August 24.
Please spread the word to all of your friends (especially 9th graders who may not be aware they can audition) about auditions. They are the first week of school. There is no time to lose!

For more information on how to audition, please bookmark this website and check back shortly. You will be required to perform a monologue from a list of pieces that will be posted on this website very soon.

2011 Performing Arts Musical

The 2011 Performing Arts Musical will be:

Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida!

We reserve the right to change the musical, but we are currently planning on Aida. If our directors don't see what they need at the auditions, the musical is still susceptible to change. Remember to be prepared! Aida can be a great show, so contribute to how brilliant it can be by being prepared.
