It kind of breaks my heart that I didn’t get to put all of you on the team that I wanted to. Every single seat on the bus is full. There is literally no way to fit anyone else on. Thank you all for auditioning. There were so many great people who auditioned.
For those who are on the team, make sure you are at the mandatory meeting Friday (tomorrow) after school. It will be short.
9th Graders who made the team, come over to the park across the street (700 east) from Hillcrest after you get out of school. We are having a giant theatre party. You are welcome to come participate. You can get your information from Mr. Long at the party (since you won't be out of school in time for the mandatory meeting).

Back to School!
Hey everyone! This is Kate, your 2010-2011 theatre president. It's hard to believe that it's already the last day of summer vacation! Hopefully everyone had an amazing summer- and hopefully, you're as excited as I am for Hillcrest's 2010-2011 theatre season. I have a feeling it's going to be a great year, and there are many different ways to be a part of the theatre department. In fact, these first two upcoming weeks of school are jam-packed with opportunities to get involved and have tons of fun!
Shakespeare Team auditions are this Wednesday, August 25th! (SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE INFO ON SHAKESPEARE TEAM AUDITIONS.) The Shakespeare Competition is one of the most fun things you can do all year, and auditions are open to anyone! A sign up sheet will be on the theatre room door starting tomorrow morning. If you're having trouble picking a monologue, or need help with the one you picked, come to the theatre room during lunch on Tuesday or Wednesday. Presidency members will be there during both lunches, and we'd be happy to answer any questions you have, help you choose a monologue, or give you some tips on acting Shakespeare and auditioning!
Auditions for this year's big musical, Cinderella, are next Monday, August 30th! These auditions are also open to anyone in the school. All you need is a song! If you would like to be considered for a lead role, come with 16 bars of a song from a Broadway musical prepared (classic 1950s-1960s style is recommended!). Feel free to ask any member of the theatre presidency or productions company if you need help finding an audition piece.
On Friday, August 27th, there will be a PARTY at the park across the street from Hillcrest! There will be food, games, music, and more. Plus, it's a great opportunity to get to know other theatre students- and get help with your musical audition. Hope to see everybody there!
So, I hope everyone is excited for a fantastic year! I can't wait!

How to audition for the Shakespeare Team
WHEN: Wednesday, August 25 2:45-6:00pm (sign up for a specific time outside the Theatre Room. A sign-up list will be posted on Monday, August 23)
WHERE: Hillcrest High School Room C-202 (the Theatre Room: 2nd Floor)
WHO: Any 10th, 11th or 12th grade Hillcrest High School student who is academically elligible (at least a 2.0 and no more than 1 F on last quarter's report card) AS WELL AS any 9th grade student who is attending a Hillcrest feeder school (Midvale, Union, Albion) and is academically elligible (see above)
WHAT: Hillcrest High School's award-winning Shakespeare Team. 50 student actors who make the team will travel down to Cedar City for a weekend in October and compete in one of the nation's largest acting competitions. Check out the post below this one for more details.
WHY: It will be one of the most memorable experiences of your high school career. One of Hillcrest's most successful traditions!
HOW: Select one of the monologues below and have it prepared to perform at your audition. Although it is not required that you memorize your piece (since some students will not have access to these pieces until school begins), you are encouraged to be comfortable with the language and familiar with what your character is saying. This may mean that you choose to memorize it. However, that is not necessarily required of you.
Select one of the following monologues. Some of these are actual monologue pieces that we may be competing with this year. Others are from scenes that may be on our team. Therefore, your audition will help me see which roles you excel at as I choose who will be playing the leads this year. Choose wisely. :-)

Shakespeare Team 2010
In 2010, for the first time, 9th grade students attending HHS feeder schools (Midvale Middle, Union Middle, and Albion Middle) will be allowed to audition for a spot on Hillcrest High School's award-winning Shakespeare Team. In addition, as always, auditions will be open to any 10th, 11th or 12th grade student attending Hillcrest High.

The Utah Shakespearean Festival's annual High School Shakespeare Competition is back!
Now in its 34th year, the competition gathers students from more than 90 schools in 8 states, and is the only inter-state drama competition in the area.
Team members benefit not only from competing for and being adjudicated by professional actors and directors from across the country, but are also given the opportunity to see professional theatre as well as work from high schools across the country. In addition, workshops in dozens of areas related to the theatre world are offered. There is honestly, nothing else like it. It is consistently one of the greatest experiences of a students' high school career. Don't miss your chance!
The competition will be held October 7-9, 2010 in Cedar City, UT. The trip will cost $200 per participant and includes transportation, hotel, some food, t-shirt, play tickets, and entrance fees. Fee waivers do not apply. There is also a UHSAA $50 participation fee that needs to be paid if the student is not in a Hillcrest drama class. That fee is waivable. In order to participate, a student must be UHSAA
elligible (ie. must have higher than a 2.0 GPA and no more than 1 F on their last report card).
A Shakespeare Team consists of the following competition pieces:
*One 10-minute ensemble scene. These can include anywhere from 4 to 70 students. Hillcrest's ensemble scenes usually use as many kids as we can fit onto the bus (between 40-50).
*2 duo/trio scenes. 3-5 minutes. 2 or 3 students per scene.
*3 monologues. 2-4 minutes. 1 student per piece.
All scenes are cuttings from Shakespeare's plays. There are also events for stage crew, dance, improv, and choral groups to compete.
Rehearsals for the ensemble scene are held on Saturdays and some evenings throughout the month of September at HHS.
In the past, some of the honors and awards Hillcrest has won at the competition have included:
*1st Place Ensemble Scene (2009, 2008, 2007)
*Larry Lott "Best Actor" Scholarship (2008, 2007)
*1st Place Tech Olympics (2008)
*1st Place Duo/Trio Scene (2008)
*In addition, Hillcrest's ensemble scene was the first scene to ever be asked to perform in front of the thousands of competitors at the competition's Closing Ceremonies in 2008.
Auditions for the team will be held Wednesday afternoon, August 25.
