How to audition for the 2011 Shakespeare Team

WHEN: Wednesday, August 24 2:45-6:00pm (sign up for a specific time outside the Theatre Room. A sign-up list will be posted on the first day of school Monday, August 22)

WHERE: Hillcrest High School Room C-202 (the Theatre Room: 2nd Floor)

WHO: Any 10th, 11th or 12th grade Hillcrest High School student AS WELL AS any 9th grade student who is attending a Hillcrest feeder school (Midvale, Union, Albion). All auditioners must be academically elligible (at least a 2.0 and no more than 1 F on last quarter's report card).

WHAT: Hillcrest High School's defending-champion Shakespeare Team. Approximately 50 student actors who make the team will travel down to Cedar City for a weekend in October and compete in one of the nation's largest acting competitions. Check out the post below this one for more details.

WHY: It will be one of the most memorable experiences of your high school career. One of Hillcrest's most successful traditions!

HOW: Select one of the monologues below and have it prepared to perform at your audition. Although it is not required that you memorize your piece (since some students will not have access to these pieces until school begins), you are encouraged to be comfortable with the language and familiar with what your character is saying. This may mean that you choose to memorize it. However, that is not necessarily required of you.

Select one of the following monologues. Some of these are actual monologue pieces that we may be competing with this year. Others are from scenes that may be on our team. Therefore, your audition will help me see which roles you excel at as I choose who will be playing the leads this year. Each piece has a different mood/feel/objective, so read through them all and choose wisely. Cast yourself well. :-)

FEMALE: Coriolanus - Volumnia
FEMALE: Henry VI, Part 1 - Joan la Pucelle
FEMALE: Henry VI, Part 2 - Duchess of Gloucester
FEMALE: Richard II - Duchess of York
FEMALE: The Two Noble Kinsmen - Schoolmaster
MALE: Cymbeline - Posthumus Leonatus
MALE: Henry VI, Part 2 - King Henry VI

If you have any questions, please contact a Theatre Presidency member, or post your question as a comment on this blog and we will be happy to answer it for you. Get excited!

Hi Taylor---
You just need to select one of them to audition with. if you let me know which one you want to do, I can help explain it to you. Also, the 2 days before the auditions, my theatre presidency kids will be in my room before school pecifically to help people with their audition pieces. Thanks and good luck!

So I have a question, I've heard of 2 different guys doing the same monologue I'm doing, what are you looking for as far as these auditions go for? Are you looking for leads for ensemble scene in our tryout monologues, or are you looking for people who will be able to do these as competition pieces?

Eli---
I am looking for all of the above. I need to find my ensemble leads, monologues, and duo/trio scenes all from these auditions. That does not mean that which ever piece you choose is the only piece you will be elligible to be cast in. There are many more roles I am casting besides the 5 monologues on the website. I just want you to find which one showcases you the best and go for it. I'll take it from there. Since there are only 5 monologues for men, it will be inevitable that other boys will do the same piece as you. Don't worry about it. It's designed that way. It's like a normal audition and a call-back mixed in one. If you have questions about what I am looking for as far as a specific piece is concerned, I can answer that...but I would have to know which piece you are wondering about.
Good luck!

Mr. Long, i found the one i would want to do.
It is HENRY VI, PART 1 Act 3, Scene 3. If i knew what kind of emotion i need for this i could act it out!
Im new to hillcrest so im not sure where your room is!
Thanks again!

Taylor---
In the piece you chose, Joan of Arc is trying to convince the Duke of Burgundy to betray the British and join up with her and the French. This would be a big deal if he were to do so because it would give them a bunch of inside of information. Joan is pulling out all the stops to get him to come back to the French side (he used to be in Joan's army before switching to the British side suring the war). To make this monologue work, you have to really convince Burgundy to switch sides. She wants him to join her army so badly! Think of the different ways in which she could do that and play those.
My room is C-202 (2nd floor just above the cafeteria).
Hope this helps---
Mr. Long
